The rate of rejection is still high: Only one in three of the first messages sent by members of dating site OKCupid.com ever get a response (sorry guys, the rate is only 27 per cent for you).
According to dating experts, this is because people don’t realize that the same rules of engagement apply on the Internet. The team at OKCupid recently pored over 500,000 first messages sent by the site’s members and tracked response rates. If you’re striking out, it may be because you’re committing one of these sins.
You’re gushing about looks
Flattering someone you’re interested in is a good way to go in that first message, but make sure it’s with the right compliments.
Messages sent on OKCupid with the words “sexy,” “beautiful” and “hot” had much lower response rates than those that were more personality-based, such as “awesome,” “fascinating” and “cool.”
“When you meet someone in a bar, all you have to go with has to do with physical appearance. Because of profiles, the expectation is that you should have something more than just, ‘You’re pretty,’” said Sam Yagan, co-founder of OKCupid ….

The world of cyber-dating is getting more creative. We no longer have to rely on sorting through matches on our favorite online dating sites to meet other single strangers; we can grab our iPhones or iPod Touches and in an instant, have a date. Or at least, we can be informed of available daters within a 5-mile radius of where we are drinking our coffee. Now that’s technology.
Two new iPhone applications have launched this week, and they offer quite different services than an online dating site like eHarmony. “iHookUpNow” by Checkmate Mobile, Inc. provides a GPS-enabled application to help you find singles located in your immediate area. Their website advertises a more casual approach to dating. For instance, if you find yourself in Santa Monica and want to visit a local bar, you can send a message to all iHookUpNow users in the area, and see if you get any takers to join you. If you do, you will receive a message with a picture of a potential hook-up….

“Either I was overlooked or I would sometimes get someone who didn’t read the part where I said how heavy I was,” said Colby. She included that she was a large woman (size 20) in her profile and posted photos, but typically when she reminded matches about her size, they’d say, “‘Oh. I didn’t know. That changes things.’”
Cheryl Sellick, 54, of Cherryville, N.C., who has been on Match.com and Plentyoffish.com, doesn’t say she is a BBW (big beautiful woman), size 26, in her profile, but does post photos.
She sends the men an e-mail before meeting in person: “‘I want to remind you I am a big beautiful woman. Are you sure you want to do this?’” Some guys are gracious about it, she said, but “most of them are just gone.”
Sellick is now looking for matches on the MoretoLove.com dating site, and feels more comfortable knowing the men are looking for larger women…
